JOB SUMMARY

The Part-Time Custodian/Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment within City of Commerce facilities, primarily serving the Police and Fire Department buildings. This position performs routine custodial duties including cleaning offices, restrooms, common areas, and other workspaces to ensure facilities are well maintained for employees and visitors. Duties may include sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, restocking supplies and other duties as assigned. The position works independently with minimal supervision and helps ensure city facilities remain presentable, functional, and welcoming to staff and the public. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Cleans and cares for buildings and facilities to ensure they are maintained in a safe and healthy manner.

  2. Performs all janitorial services for the facilities including cleaning offices and rooms of the buildings by vacuuming carpets, dusting, mopping floors, wiping down tables and counter tops, emptying trash, setting up and/or taking down tables, and cleaning glass doors and windows.

  3. Scrub and sanitize bathroom surfaces including floors, toilets, toilet seats, shower stalls, counters, fixtures, and mirrors.

  4. Provides minor maintenance to facilities, may assist in painting and other minor facility repairs, such as, changing light bulbs, minor repairs to toilets and urinals and other duties as assigned.

  5. Maintains inventory and prepares orders for janitorial cleaning and chemical supplies. 

  6. Keeps break rooms, restrooms and other rooms or offices stocked with paper goods and supplies as needed.

  7. Have a demonstrated strong work ethic; ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision. 

  8. Decides priority of requests and/or tasks.

  9. Follows established daily cleaning schedule as assigned.

  10. Regular and timely attendance is required.

  11. An understanding of basic office equipment, with access to email and a calendar. 

  12. Ability to maintain a courteous, helpful, and professional image in dealing with public, elected officials and coworkers.

  13. Promptly notifies the Facilities Maintenance Manager of equipment failures and/or repair issues.

  14. Reports any damage or acts of vandalism to the Facility Maintenance Manager.         

  15. Performs other related duties as required or assigned.  

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Coordinates and supervises the training, assignment, and development of subordinates or newly hired custodians. 

Analyzes and recommends improvements to equipment and facilities, as needed.

This position may also provide custodial support to other City of Commerce facilities as needed.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma / GED; or one to two years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  1. Experience with and knowledge of standard cleaning procedures and equipment.
  2. Ability to comprehend product labels and instructions to ensure safe product handling. Basic understanding of cleaning chemicals and procedures.
  3. Some moderate lifting required; ability to perform a physically demanding shift requiring constant activity.
  4. Ability to multi-task and perform duties with a determined timeframe.
  5. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any state.

  2. Must be able to work holidays, weekends, or after hours for special events, meetings or during emergency situations as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and taste or smell.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist in the lifting and/or moving of more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outdoor weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet/moderate.
