JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of entry-level and intermediate maintenance tasks in the care, operation, and upkeep of City parks, recreation facilities, buildings and open spaces. Work involves maintaining landscaped areas, athletic fields, playgrounds, and public facilities to ensure a safe, clean, and attractive environment for residents and visitors. 

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Mows and maintains parks, green spaces, and recreation facilities areas such as baseball and soccer fields; mows weeds; cleans and maintains courts and nets at City-owned Park spaces; maintains sprinkler systems and assists in the repair and installation of sprinkler lines and heads. 

  2. Drags and lines athletic fields for games and practices. 

  3. Inspects, cleans, and performs routine maintenance of park restrooms, drinking fountains, and other facilities.  

  4. Inspects, washes, paints and repairs or replaces park tables, benches, slabs and fixtures.

  5. Performs minor interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other basic trades work. 

  6. Performs routine inspections of vehicles and equipment for safety and maintenance needs; reports defects or needed repairs promptly.

  7. Conduct regular inspections of playgrounds, park amenities, and recreation structures, reporting hazards or damage promptly.

  8. Plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers; assists in landscape renovation and seasonal maintenance projects.

  9. Carries out seeding, fertilization, soil conditioning, watering and the pest or weed control of City’s parks and open spaces. 

  10. Maintains, repairs, and adjusts specialized turf care equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers etc. 

  11. Operates mowers, tractors, jackhammers, welders, trucks, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed. 

  12. Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions. 

  13. Performs custodial work such as required and assigned, including: change light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, sweep floors, vacuum carpets, mop, shampoo and steam clean carpets, buff non-carpeted areas, dump garbage and reline cans with liners, clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies; clean drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, light fixtures, etc. dust furniture, wash windows, clean rain gutters, and sweep roofs.

  14. Removes graffiti, litter and debris; collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds. 

  15. Open and closes facilities, locks and unlocks gates, and secures buildings as needed.  

  16. Assists with setup, logistics, and cleanup for community events, festivals, and other recreation events.

  17. Installs and maintains goal posts, nets, and other equipment for sport facilities, including soccer, volleyball, baseball, softball, tennis, track/field, basketball, and other sports as needed. 

  18. Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage and foundation work. 

  19. Assists with maintenance of other City facilities such as the public library, City Hall, downtown, airport, and other City facilities as assigned. 

  20. Maintains accurate records of work completed, maintenance performed, and materials used through written or electronic tracking systems. 

  21. Supports the relationship between the City of Commerce and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with other City staff, citizens of Commerce and visitors. Maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information, consistent with City employee ethics training.

  22. Participates in required safety meetings and trainings; complies with all City safety regulations and practices safe work habits.

  23. May assist in training seasonal staff, volunteers, or new employees on maintenance procedures and equipment use.

  24. Position may require responding after hours, including holidays, and special events. This position does involve working some weekends. 

  25. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: 

Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent and/or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position.

 

Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  1. Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, and supplies used in building and grounds maintenance.

  2. Some knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs.

  3. Some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions, including safe equipment operation.

  4. Skill in safe and efficient operation of tools, vehicles and maintenance equipment. 

  5. Ability to work independently and to complete assigned tasks according to schedule.

  6. Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under varying weather conditions.

  7. Ability to communicate clearly and courteously, both verbally and in writing. 

  8. Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely. 

  9. Ability to understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions.

  10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public. 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any state.

  2. Must meet departmental physical standards and participate in safety and skills training as required.

  3. May be required to obtain certifications relevant to grounds maintenance.

 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Pickup truck, lawn and landscaping equipment including tractors, mowers, aerifiers, chainsaws, edgers, trimers, electric or battery-powered tools, pumps, and sprinklers. Miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical and cement finishing work. Janitorial equipment including; floor buffers, steam cleaner, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuums, mops, brooms, and dusting equipment. Computers, tablets, mobile devices or other digital work order systems may be used for recordkeeping and task management. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work includes standing, using hands to manipulate, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and repetitive reaching with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk, talk, hear, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee must frequently push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally push, pull, lift and/or carry up to 100 pounds. 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside-weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
